Dr Alaika Kassim

Researcher & Lecturer

Dr Kassim was appointed as the first female lecturer in the Bioresources Engineering discipline at UKZN. She has firmly planted her feet in the field of postharvest technology and is now focused on expanding her research in the field of renewable energy. Dr Kassim was also the first female Chairperson of the South African Institute of Agricultural Engineers (SAIAE) – KZN Branch. Prior to finding her current locus, Dr Kassim was employed as a consultant engineer and was involved in many rural developmental projects such as school restorations and providing water and sanitation. In 2017 Dr Kassim received the UKZN Wonder Woman in Science accolade for being a passionate, pioneering and persistent female in the field of science.
