His PhD research at Natal University (now UKZN) was in the modelling of atmospheric dispersion. On completion he worked 5 years for chemical company AECI in the development of a plant-wide control system for an ammonia plant. Thereafter he lectured and researched at UKZN for 30 years, followed by the last 9 years as Professor Emeritus. His main area of research is Process Control, in which he has a number of publications, including books Applied Process Control – Essential Methods, and Applied Process Control – Efficient Problem Solving, published by Wiley-VCH in 2016.
