The SAIEE UKZN Student Chapter hosted their Year-End Event on 25 October 2024 at the Deck@Unite Conference Centre, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Aberdare Cables.
This gathering was a wonderful celebration of students’ hard work throughout the year and a chance for final-year Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering (EECE) students to unwind and connect with peers and faculty just weeks before their Final Design Project submissions.
The afternoon was filled with inspiring talks, beginning with Professor Glen Bright, Dean and Head of the School of Engineering, who set an encouraging tone for the event. Following his address, representatives from Aberdare Cables took the stage to share their insights and experiences from the industry. Dr Ernest Bhero represented the EECE discipline and encouraged students to cultivate an innovative mindset, while Professor Tahmid Quazi urged students to consider their postgraduate options.
Ms Viroshnee Gounden, SAIEE UKZN Student Chapter Chairperson, shared her reflections on the chapter’s successes over the past year and offered advice for the upcoming final design projects. Ms Nombulelo Ngidi, the Secretary, delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, while Dr Mohamed Fayaz Khan, Vice-Chair of the SAIEE KZN Centre, kept the energy flowing as the event’s MC.
To add a bit of fun, the students voted in a light-hearted “Most Likely to…” category. Mr Busiswa Sibiya was recognised as “Most Likely to Become a Minister,” Mr Uphile Kubheka as “Most Likely to Become a Lecturer,” and Mr Kopanang Letlatsa as “Most Likely to Become the Next Elon Musk.”
Overall, it was a fantastic afternoon filled with laughter, recognition, and new connections, leaving everyone excited for what lies ahead.
